Vintage Levis or Wrangler Jeans - Is Old Better Than New When It Comes To Denim?

By Dave Kerr
Wrangler jeans and Levis jeans are both brands of vintage jeans that have been around for many years - over 160 in the case of Levis. Both brands are extraordinarily popular throughout the World, especially in the developed economic areas such as the United States, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and many parts of Europe, China and Japan. In the USA alone, it is estimated that around 20%, or 1-in-5, of all jeans sold bear the Wrangler label in some form.

In the USA alone, it is estimated that around 20%, or 1-in-5, of all jeans sold bear the Wrangler label in some form.
Wrangler is a fashion design company that creates casual denim and related clothing for men, women and children. It was first started by a man known as C. C. Hudson. C. C. Hudson first worked at the Spring Hill Farm located in Williamson Country, Tennessee. In 1897, he left the farm because to travel to Greensboro, North Carolina where he could start his own business. Wrangler began as textile business in the town of Greensboro, which had a very strong textile industry. The company was started with the help of C.C Hudson's brother and together they began the Wrangler legacy. Their first products were denim overalls and other work clothing, but as sales began to boom they expanded into other areas of clothing. Wrangler jeans are made from cotton, polyester and spandex in a huge variety of cuts and styles. You will be able to find all kinds of designs including proportional fit, slim and skinny, boot cut, riding jean, "cowboy butt", low-rise, ultra low-rise and Madison jeans. Modern men's wrangler jeans carry on the work-wear roots by being very rugged and durable as well as sporting very stylish and fashionable designs.
Levis Vintage is another American denim label that was created by Jacob Youphres and Levi Strauss. Jacob Youphres travelled to the United States in 1854 from Eastern Europe to seek his fortune. After he arrived in America, he changed his name so that no one recognized him. Youphres got the idea of making a jean when a customer asks him whether he could make a more durable style of pants. The female customer was looking for a pant for her husband his work pants always wore out very quickly, a very common problem at the time. Since he didn't have anything suitable at the time, he worked alongside Levi Strauss to solve the problem. Together they started to make pants to sell which soon rocketed in popularity and have not slowed down since. Other innovations by Youphres and Strauss included the metal rivet which was attached to the joins and seams of jeans to strengthen them and lengthen the time between repairs or replacements of the jeans. This particular innovation was granted its own patent and assigned to the Levi Strauss Company. Vintage Levis jeans offer many distinctive features and designs including washed, rumple, dirty washed, and rinsed jeans. Some Levis Vintage jeans have drips, wear marks and even twisted seams. You can find Levis Vintage jeans in all kinds of colours including indigo, black and blue.
So, out of the two labels, is the old better than new? Well, it depends entirely on where in time you think the perfect denim lies. If you think the glory days of denim jeans ended with the Wild West, then you should check out vintage Levis jeans. However, if you think the best denim is more than a few years away, you would be better off going along with Wrangler jeans. Levis Vintage is a celebration of the past, whereas Wrangler jeans are working towards the future.
